Data-Driven HVAC and Building-Energy Optimization

A winning START Hack project using HVAC IoT data and thermal building modelling to explore data-driven energy optimization.

Role

Organization
START Hack 2025 / Belimo
Location
St. Gallen, Switzerland
Period
March 2025 – January 2026

Buildings generate large volumes of operational HVAC data, but converting this data into useful energy decisions requires a model that connects system behaviour with the physical building.

At START Hack 2025, our team worked on Belimo’s case using HVAC IoT data, thermal building modelling and data-driven optimization concepts. We won the challenge and went on to continue the work in a follow-up research project.

In collaboration with an established building automation company, we took an interdisciplinary approach to data-driven energy efficiency in commercial buildings — analyzing the HVAC ecosystem, mapping relevant stakeholders and evaluating selected technical and commercial opportunities. Combining academic research, expert discussions and high-level feasibility assessments of smart building concepts, the work deepened our understanding of how digital technologies can support more efficient, cost-effective and sustainable building operations.
