Buildings generate large volumes of operational HVAC data, but converting this data into useful energy decisions requires a model that connects system behaviour with the physical building.

At START Hack 2025, our team worked on Belimo’s case using HVAC IoT data, thermal building modelling and data-driven optimization concepts. We won the company challenge and continued the collaboration in a follow-up research project with Belimo.

The work combined fast problem structuring, technical modelling and the physical constraints of building systems. In line with the confidentiality of the follow-up research, this case study covers the problem and approach at a general level without disclosing technical specifications or research findings.
